What is Commercial Photography?
Commercial photography can be a wide range photography genres primarily for business use, that usually has an end goal of brining in more revenue for a company or brand and to get more views of their content.
It can be something as simple as photos for a company website, a targeted social media ad, or something as large as a global billboard advertising campaign.
I shoot a whole load of different things as a commercial photographer.
Things like headshots and portraits of CEOs or other corporate people.
Lifestyle photographs like cabin crew serving on an aircraft, or people on a train working on a laptop. People having fun on an adventure outside for a global clothing brand etc.
I also shoot interiors and property for interior designers or home styling magazines.
I get to work on a lot of different and exciting projects for a good variety of clients, like airlines such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and EasyJet, railway companies like South Western Railway, TransPennine Express, and Avanti West Coast, big advertising agencies such as Ogilvy, IMA, and Cedar, and many other smaller private clients and individuals.
are mostly used for advertising and creating brand awareness, and are published and used in, websites, social media, product placements, brochures, merchandising, sale pitches and presentations, printed and digital screens and billboards, as well as many other forms.
Types of Commercial Photography:
Some types of commercial photography can include photographs for: websites, advertising, marketing, branding, internal communications, press, and social media.
So commercial photography can cover quite a wide range of photographic genres, from products to portraits, fashion to food, lifestyle to locations, property, services, vehicles, and so on.
What is a Commercial Photographer?
A commercial photographer is someone who takes pictures primarily for business use. Either to promote or advertise a company, brand, person, service, product or place etc.
A lot of my work as a commercial photographer in London is providing photographs that my clients can use on their websites, social media, digital advertising screens, and in brochures. Sometimes billboards and posters too, but for the majority of my clients, they want the photos mostly for online media and a small amount of printed media.
Most of my commercial photography work is specialised in the Aviation, Railway, and Travel industry. It's what I love the most and it's where I started in my professional photography career.
As a commercial photographer though, I don't have to stick to one genre, and I do get a lot of clients outside of the travel industry too. So a commercial photographers skills are usually very easily transferable to other mediums.
I also create large batches of images for company photo libraries that they can then use for press releases, news items, and internal communications for a number of years.
Here, I go into a company anywhere from 1 day to a month to create an image library depending on how big the company is and what they want to use the photos for.
